Colour

Colour is a primary factor in sunstone valuation. Premium sunstones display rich, warm tones with uniform distribution. High-quality stones typically show:

• Vivid orange, reddish-orange, or golden hues
• Even colour with minimal brown or grey overtones
• Strong aventurescent sparkle throughout

Paler stones or those with muted sparkle are generally less valuable, while stones with vibrant, lively shimmer command higher prices.

Clarity

Clarity in sunstone is assessed not only by transparency but also by the visibility of inclusions producing aventurescence. High-quality stones are:

• Free from significant cracks or surface-reaching fractures
• Transparent to translucent, showing reflective shimmer clearly
• Eye-pleasing inclusions that enhance sparkle

Stones with internal fractures affecting durability or reducing shimmer are considered lower value.

Cut

Cut enhances both brilliance and aventurescence. Well-cut sunstones maximise light reflection and distribute sparkle evenly. Key cut considerations include:

• Proper facet alignment
• Symmetrical shaping to highlight shimmer
• Adequate depth to preserve durability
• Smooth polish to enhance aventurescence

Cuts such as oval, cushion, or cabochon often emphasise the gem’s reflective inclusions.

Carat Weight

Larger sunstones are rarer and can command higher prices, particularly when colour, clarity, and aventurescence are strong.

• A smaller, vibrant stone may be more valuable than a larger, duller one
• Larger stones must maintain uniform colour and sparkle
• Very large, high-quality stones are highly sought after by collectors
